Jira integration

About

The Jira integration pulls Jira issues into ControlMap and attaches them as evidence to the controls you choose. This is useful for controls such as Change Management and Incident Response, where the work is tracked in Jira and an auditor needs to see the list of tickets.

You write a search query in JQL (Jira's search language), preview the issues it returns, and link the connection to one or more controls. ControlMap fetches the issues from Jira in real time. The connection's evidence check is Search results for saved query.

The same Jira sign-in also lets you create and link Jira issues from an Evidence item. That is set up separately from your account menu, as described in Connect your personal Jira account.

Before you start

You need:

  • Setting up integrations from the client portal is part of the Pro plan. For details, see the Free, Essentials and Pro plans article.
  • A Jira account on the Jira site you want to use. You sign in to Atlassian with this account during setup.
  • A JQL search query that returns the issues you want to use as evidence.

Connect Jira

  1. Go to Monitor › Integrations and select Add Integration.
  2. Search for JIRA and select its card. The card shows the category Email & Collaboration and the description "Allows you to see JIRA tickets as evidence in ControlMap".

The Add Integration window with JIRA typed in the search box and the JIRA card showing

  1. On the Connection page, select Connect to Jira. ControlMap takes you to Atlassian's authorization page, then back to ControlMap when you approve. The saved search uses the Jira account of the person who connects, so connect with an account that can see the issues you want.

Jira has a single-page setup with no steps, so there are no separate Checks, Watchers or Schedule steps. The Connection page opens with a help panel on the right that explains what the connector does.

The Add JIRA page on the Connection step with the Connect to Jira button and the help panel on the right

After you connect, the page shows these fields:

  • Jira site: shown when your Jira account has more than one site. Choose the site to use.
  • Integration name: required. Enter a name for this connection.
  • Jira Search Query (In JQL Syntax): required. Enter the query that returns the issues you want as evidence.
  • Linked Controls: choose the controls that the issues are attached to as evidence.

Then finish like this:

  1. Select Preview Results to check that you see the issues you expect. The preview lists the issue keys. Select Next results to see more.
  2. Select Save Integration.

What you'll see after connecting

The Jira connection appears as a card on Monitor › Integrations. Select the card to open its page. For the parts of the page that work the same for every tool, see the Connect an integration article.

The issues returned by your search query are attached as evidence to the controls you linked.

Connect your personal Jira account

Use this page to authorize ControlMap with your own Jira account, so you can create and access Jira work items using your own credentials. The Connect to JIRA item in the account menu is available to MSP partner users with the Super Admin or Compliance Manager role.

  1. Open the account menu and select Connect to JIRA. The Manage Your JIRA Connection page opens.
  2. Select Connect to JIRA, then approve access on Atlassian's authorization page. When it succeeds, the page shows "Connection to JIRA established successfully".

The Manage Your JIRA Connection page with the Connect to JIRA button

Once you are connected, the Jira Issues tab on an Evidence item can create a Jira issue in a project and issue type you choose, or link existing Jira issues. After you connect, this page shows:

  • The message "You are connected and authorized to JIRA at" followed by your site address.
  • A Re-authorize JIRA button, to authorize ControlMap with Jira again.
  • An Authorized JIRA site dropdown, shown if you authorized more than one Jira site. Choose the site you want ControlMap to use. The change saves right away.

Disconnect or change settings

  • To change the name, site, search query or linked controls, open the connection's card on Monitor › Integrations, change the setting on the Connection tab and select Update Connection.
  • To sign in to Jira again, select Reconnect to Jira on the connection's page.
  • To delete the connection, select the bin icon on its card. This also deletes the assets and their compliance status. The Connect an integration article has the details.
